Salem roamed the spacious room, plonked himself down on a chair with an icy cup of his Nubian Abri juice, and absentmindedly started reading the fable he had copied onto his papyrus; “The Tale of the Two Crocodiles (Divine Punishment). In Thebes, long ago, Baket, the fisherman, was sailing the Nile fishing for his family’s dinner, as he did on most nights. Then, one evening, the powerful Neferhotep, accused him of stealing water from the temple. Although Baket was innocent, Neferhotep’s guards drowned him in the river as punishment. Baket’s widow, seized by sorrow, called out, praying and pleading to Sobek, the crocodile god, for revenge. Yet, for months, her prayers went unanswered.
