In Thebes, long ago, Baket, the fisherman, was sailing the Nile fishing for his family’s dinner, as he did on most nights. Then, one evening, the powerful Neferhotep, accused him of stealing water from the temple. Although Baket was innocent, Neferhotep’s guards drowned him in the river as punishment. Baket’s widow, seized by sorrow, called out, praying and pleading to Sobek, the crocodile god, for revenge. Yet, for months, her prayers went unanswered.
